The Most Dangerous Chocolate Cake Recipe

My mama e-emailed this recipe to me, and I'm not sure whether she did it because she loves me, or she wants me to die of dessert overdose.

It's a chocolate cake in a mug!! HELLO! I ate it for lunch today, because I decided that it would take less time to make than a turkey sandwich.

Maybe that's not true, and I ate it today because it's chocolate cake in a mug, but you get the point.

5 Minute Chocolate Cake Recipe

4 tablespoons flour
4 tablespoons sugar
2 tablespoons cocoa
1 egg
3 tablespoons milk
3 tablespoons oil
A small splash of vanilla extract
1 large coffee mug

Add dry ingredients to mug, and mix well.
Add the egg and mix thoroughly. Pour in the milk and oil and mix well. Add the vanilla extract, and mix again.

Put your mug in the microwave and cook for 3 minutes at 1000 watts (high). The cake will rise over the top of the mug, but don't be alarmed! Allow to cool a little, and tip out onto a plate if desired. Enjoy!

  3. I tried your recipe but, sadly, my cake came out quite rubbery and unappealing...Any idea what I did wrong?

  4. OK, this recipe is going to get me in a lot of trouble. If I mix up the flour, sugar, and cocoa in a large batch in advance, I can cut the prep time to say 4 minutes flat. :-)

  5. Haha, thanks for the amusing comments! Anon, I'd try to cook it a little less, since your microwave might be more powerful than mine (got mine in a raffle in 2004--yep. You just turn the crank for the time/temp you want. No buttons or anything). You might also want to let it cool a bit. Then it goes from fudgy to slightly spongy and cakelike.

  6. I discovered this recipe, via stumbleupon.com and had to try it, though it was 10:30pm, way past the time I should be consuming anything sweet.

I have a great microwave and it nuked beautifully in 2.5 minutes, wow! I can't wait to surprise my husband with it.

  7. I love this recipe. I have made it 3 times, all while drunk and twice it turned out great. The not-so-great time happened when I substituted hot cocoa mix for the real cocoa. I could not get the hardened substance out of my Christmas mug and ended up having to through out the entire mug. NO SUBSTITUTIONS! Delish!

  8. Do you use real cocoa or hot cocoa mix? If its hot cocoa mix, which kind?

  9. I now know exactly what I will be having for breakfast, lunch and quite possibly dinner tomorrow. Damn you!!

  10. I did the math on the ingredients and if I eat the whole thing, which duh, it's 750 calories. Better go for a run first ;)

  11. I made this and it turned out a little rubbery, but totally delicious!

For a little more naughtiness, I suggest a dollop of cream on top, it'll seep through the bubble holes and moisten it up
    =D

  17. To really make this cake yummy (and many more calories) you can add to it! :) We made this tonight with friends (instead of studying). Here's how we changed up the recipie:

Took the yolk out of the egg (to cut down on the "eggy" flavor we experienced)

    Added: Hershey's chocolate syrup
    Caramel ice cream topping
    peacans
    chocolate chips
    coconut
and 1 large marshmallow to the middle of the whole thing after it was all mixed together --- this is not advisable because the marshmallow got as large as a small tennis ball and wasn't a significant addition

Suffice it to say we had a very large coffee mug!

  18. I was out of sugar so I substituted it with 3 tablespoons of honey, 1 tablespoon of rum, and one packet of splenda. Although probably not as good as the original recipe, it was okay.

  19. While "stumblilng" tonight I found this recipe... even though it was 11:30pm I decided to try it. It's now 11:47 and I have this rubbery chunk of chocolate cake beside my computer. It is edible, and would cure an emergency chocolate craving but I wouldn't suggest serving it to company.

  24. I discovered this a while ago after my mummy sent it to me..i guess we both have loving mothers X3 i've changed it a little by substituting oil with melted butter and changing a tbsp of sugar for cocoa. Also make sure if yoy have a high powered microwave to put it on a lower setting (about 1000 watts) or put it in fo less time. Its a little like pudding so delicious with ice cream!

  25. My cousin and I just tried to make this, but unfortunately, it turned out dreadful. After we put it in the microwave, it started to smell really gross, and once we took it out, it didn't smell good, or taste good at all. It was all rubbery, with a horrible after taste.

Maybe we made it wrong? Who knows. I'm guessing so since all of the other comments say it works perfectly. I'll try it again sometime.

  26. Pretty good! Only thing I changed was I put a pinch of salt and a handful of chocolate chips in... which of course sank to the bottom and left and nice little surprise for me. And it was a big helping! I could only eat about half of it. I quite liked the fudgy-ness of it. Props.

  27. Looks like a cake, tastes like a cake although a tad rubbery. 2.5mins and use a paper towel.
Think i'll try another with choc buds added.

  28. homfg this is so evil. but amazing. The cake turned out pretty dang good considering i made it so fast. Texture wasn't perfect but still tasted like chocolate cake. 8D I plan on experimenting with this a lot in the future. *0*

  32. I didn't have any cocoa powder, so I used chocolate ice cream topping. It wasn't bad for something so quick. I think it just needs a little icing.

    ReplyDelete
  33. So I played around with this recipe a bit. I replaced the oil with butter and whipped the egg. I cooked it for 2 minutes and 30 seconds instead of 3 minutes. And I topped it with cream as another person suggested. I like the results a lot. C: Came out with a better texture. Less spongy. But quite different from the original result. Om nom nom.

  38. Just finished making a second one for me and the younger brother, when you're pushing 2:30 and looking for a lunchtime substitute... nothing beats chocolate cake.

Added a Tablespoon of chocolate chips and a pinch of salt as well as beat the egg a bit to make it more fluffy as i didn't like how rubbery the first one was.

    ReplyDelete
  39. i was stupiddddd and used whole wheat flour instead of cake flour. turned out...tasting like whole wheat flour. might as well go the whole way on this one :]

if you make a quick batch of liquidy chocolate icing and drip it over the cake, it is delicious delicious :D

  54. I'm a little scared and totally excited at the same time!

I made pumpkin pie custard in a mug a few weeks ago. It was definitely NOT a success. It resembled pumpkin flavored scrambled eggs. DISGUSTING! So bad I felt guilty subjecting my boyfriend to it!

  56. Loved this recipe for a long time and just had it again recently and it was the best one yet. *o*

I replaced the oil with butter and whipped the egg beforehand. I cooked it for 2:30 instead as well to insure it didn't get spongy. Topped it off with whipped cream that seeped wonderfully into the cake making it very moist. So good. Thinking about adding some chocolate chips next time too.

I think the most important thing to remember here is to not cook it too long. Try cooking at 2 minutes or 2:30 at first just to be sure.

  57. Well isn't that just a smart thing to do. One of my friends just pointed me to your site and already, I love it! Awesome Idea, I'm doing this ASAP!

    a pinch of salt
    1 egg
    3 tbs of milk
3 tbs of virgin olive oil

mix in the rest of the wet ingredients to the egg
